There will never be a Dame Joan again. We are in lesser times. Most of the stars today would be house sopranos etc. not stars.

I think most singers don't have the capacity to, let alone the balls to ride the voice on such a thin line like this. But Caballe was so secure technically as well as musically to dare to do it. She draws the listener in, she doesn't exclaim.

Sadly we will probably never hear anything like this today. Thank God a lot of these La Scala performances of Callas were recorded. La Scala should have had the forsight to record every role that Callas undertook at La Scala especially her 1956 Fedora and 1958 Il Pirata with Corelli.

Fascinating, if not entirely fair comparison between the young Joan Sutherland and the established and incomparable Maria Callas.The relative merits might be different if we were to have side by side recordings of Joan at her peak and Maria in her somewhat diminished later years

I remind you that opera is music. Drama, and text.. words ! It's not only about voice .. if so why even perform these operas ?

All these admirers.. did you understand one word ? Or was it a mush of uh vowels? How about her characterization and acting. Was she believable.. ? Did her voice fit the drama ? I've listened to this and to me it's just a bunch of vocalization... No drama, no adherence to the text . This is Joan in every opera

Much of the beauty lies in the emotions and feelings she puts into her singing. It is not necessary to understand each and every word she sings - the way she sings it tells the story.

When she was good, i mean THIS good, she was the best. God, this is a unique performance. That child-like quality she retained till the end, with a perfect voice and breath control... The stratospheric notes all in exact, exquisite tuning, like a plaintive violin solo in a clear moonlit night... I saw her in '69 or '70 in Los Angeles, in La Traviata, with Domingo. Almost as good.

Caballe's repertoire will be something of legend in years to come. She pushed the boundaries of her voice, some misses but a multitude of inspired and timelessly beautiful moments like this.

Curious where people stand between this recording and that featuring Cecilia Gasdia? I recently watched Cecilia perform 'Semiramide'...she doesn't possess the fireworks for something of that caliber in my opinion. June is great and so is Joanie but just curious what others think of Cecilia in this role/opera?
